A useful water tank quotation starts with a clear project brief, not just a request for a price per cubic metre. Before comparing suppliers, define what the tank must do, where it will be installed and which items the quotation should include.
This water tank quotation checklist is designed for contractors, distributors and project buyers preparing enquiries for sectional water storage tanks.
Quick answer: Send the supplier your application, required usable capacity, water-quality information, available installation space, connection details, site conditions and delivery destination. Ask for a written list of inclusions and exclusions so that competing quotations can be compared on the same basis.
Content
Start with the intended use: domestic water storage, an industrial process, irrigation or a dedicated fire-water reserve. If the tank serves more than one purpose, describe each duty and identify any storage that must remain reserved.
Specify the usable water volume your project requires. Ask the supplier to identify the nominal tank volume, maximum filling level, freeboard and minimum operating level used in the proposed capacity calculation.
Include the following in your enquiry:
Ask the supplier to state both nominal and usable capacity, together with the assumed operating levels. For fire-water applications, have the project designer confirm the storage requirement against the applicable project specification; this checklist is not a fire-system sizing method.
State the water source and whether the stored water is intended for potable or non-potable use. Attach a recent water analysis and the project's material specification when available, rather than selecting a tank solely by a general material label.
If stainless steel is specified, identify the requested grade and ask the supplier to confirm suitability for the water chemistry and installation environment. For other tank systems, request details of the water-contact surfaces, liners or coatings, seals and fittings as relevant.
For drinking-water projects, identify the acceptance requirements before requesting a quotation. NSF's explanation of NSF/ANSI 61 shows that health-effects evaluation covers water-contact products and materials, including coatings and sealing materials—not simply a steel grade. (nsf.org)
If certification is required, request evidence for the actual product or material offered and check its scope in the certification body's official listings. Do not treat a generic certificate or the phrase “food grade” as a complete project specification. NSF listings, for example, identify the water-contact material and applicable conditions or restrictions. (info.nsf.org)

Send a dimensioned sketch or layout drawing showing the proposed tank location. Mark the maximum available length, width and height, along with nearby walls, columns, beams and other fixed obstacles.
Separate the proposed tank dimensions from the room dimensions. Ask the supplier to identify the full installed envelope, including the support arrangement and working space.
For each proposed connection, provide:
Mark any unconfirmed connection details as provisional and request a drawing review before production. This avoids presenting an early sketch as an approved manufacturing instruction.
Tell the supplier whether the tank will be installed at ground level, on a rooftop, in a basement or on another supporting structure. Share existing foundation drawings or explain whether the civil works have yet to be designed.
Request a written statement covering the support arrangement, working space and installation responsibilities. Confirm these interfaces for the selected tank rather than adopting another project's foundation or clearance dimensions.
Your site information should cover:
Ask for the selected tank's support layout and installation requirements before finalising civil works. Foundation design and structural verification should be assigned to the responsible project engineer.
Use a scope table to make each supplier's offer explicit. The following items are questions to resolve, not a statement that every tank package includes them.
| Quotation item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Tank structure | Panels, reinforcement, roof and specified water-contact materials |
| Support components | Base frame, support arrangement and anchoring responsibility |
| Connections and accessories | Nozzles, seals, fasteners, access hatch, ladder and level indication |
| Valves and external pipework | Included items and connection boundaries |
| Pumps and controls | Tank-only supply or a separately defined equipment package |
| Site services | Assembly, supervision, leak testing and commissioning responsibilities |
| Documentation | Drawings, material records, manuals and any required certificates |
| Delivery | Packing, destination, unloading responsibility and agreed delivery terms |
If pumps are required, provide the design flow, total head, power supply and control requirements. Grundfos' pump-selection guidance identifies flow, head, water source, power and controls as key selection inputs; tank capacity alone is not enough to select a pump. (grundfos.com)
For an export enquiry, name the destination country and port or delivery location. Request the proposed packing arrangement and shipping dimensions, and ask the supplier to state what the production lead time depends on, including drawing approval and order confirmation.
Compare prices only after aligning the technical assumptions, delivery basis and exclusions.
